The Challenge

Privacy shouldn’t feel like configuring a firewall. It should feel like pressing a magic shield button.

CyberGhost wanted to bring the power of their VPN service into a mobile experience that felt both safe and empowering — not intimidating.

At the time, VPN interfaces were largely technical, opaque, and visually outdated. The challenge was to rethink the mobile journey to make privacy protection feel accessible, friendly, and one tap away.

The Vision

Our goal was to design a dark-mode interface that would evoke security, sophistication, and confidence, while the brand’s signature yellow accent symbolized energy, trust, and protection.

The experience needed to reassure first-time users and empower returning ones with clear actions and instant feedback.

The Approach

The onboarding flow was reduced to three educational steps — explaining what a VPN is before asking for sign-in.

Each screen uses playful yet trustworthy illustrations and a conversational tone, lowering the learning curve for new users.

Interaction Model

The main interaction — “Slide to Connect” — was designed to be tactile, satisfying, and symbolic.
It evokes the physical gesture of “activating protection,” reinforcing emotional reassurance through motion and haptic feedback.

State Feedback

Visual states were carefully defined:

  • Disconnected: subdued map, greyed nodes.

  • Connecting: animated network lines pulsing across continents.

  • Protected: strong yellow overlay and confirmation badge with IP and location.

These transitions build trust — users see the protection happen.

The Result

The redesigned mobile app positioned CyberGhost as a leader in privacy UX, combining technical trust with human-centered design.

It became a foundation for the brand’s subsequent evolution and visual refreshes in later years.

The best security design is invisible — it gives peace of mind without asking for attention.

Reflection

Design can act as a bridge between technical trust and emotional comfort, turning complex systems into experiences that feel as simple as flipping a switch.

This project taught us that cybersecurity doesn’t have to look intimidating.
